Leverhulme Trust

Oxford University’s ‘Balkh Art and Cultural Heritage Project,’ funded by the Leverhulme Trust aims to embark on research on Afghanistan’s early Islamic history, and to build capacities of Afghan colleagues in cultural heritage research. Since 2011, scholars in the UK and abroad have studied textual and material cultures of Balkh in northern Afghanistan. Historical Balkh had been of the oldest, largest and most important Afghani cities until the late medieval era.
